From Psychology to Data Science: My Career Journey | How I Transitioned into Data Analytics In this video, I share my unconventional journey from a background in psychology to becoming a data scientist and data analytics expert. You might be surprised to learn that I didn’t start in math, stats, or computer science—instead, I began in psychology, specializing in health psychology and advanced statistical modeling. I’ll discuss how my PhD research helped me develop skills in predictive modeling, neural networks, and path analysis, and how my experience in the public sector (NHS, local government) led me to discover data analytics. Transitioning to the private sector, I set up analytics functions at companies like ITV, leveraging my psychology background to understand and predict consumer behavior. When working with new datasets, data analysts often encounter data quality issues—like missing values or inconsistent date formats—that prevent accurate analysis. Analysts may try to automate fixes, but sometimes these issues are hidden or complex, and fixing them takes valuable time. Since organizations don’t always support spending time on data cleanup, analysts might ignore a percentage of the data or include it with errors. While this seems efficient, it risks skewing results, especially if the poor-quality data represents a significant group within the dataset. And because data quality work is "invisible," it’s often undervalued. The best approach? Flag data quality issues to the business, highlight limitations in your findings, and document these assumptions. This way, everyone is aware that if low-quality data impacts the results, it’s noted. Currently, AI systems scrape the internet, leveraging the vast amount of digital information humans have created. However, this approach has a twofold problem: AI will eventually exhaust high-quality data sources and start relying on lower-quality user generated content, and then eventually AI-generated content. This shift poses significant challenges: Bias Amplification: AI models trained on biased data will perpetuate and even amplify these biases, creating echo chambers where only certain perspectives are reinforced. Loss of Diversity: As AI replicates existing patterns, fields like storytelling and marketing may suffer from a lack of innovation and diversity, leading to repetitive and uninspired content. Model Collapse: Training AI on AI-generated data can degrade the quality of models over time, resulting in less useful and innovative outputs. Despite these challenges, there’s a silver lining. Human oversight remains crucial in curating and correcting AI models, ensuring that biases are addressed and diversity is maintained. Original content creators will continue to play a vital role, as their unique contributions are essential for innovation. Why Traditional Training Falls Short: Expecting everyone to attend data training courses or math classes to understand data is often ineffective. Organizations frequently struggle when trying to teach all employees how to use dashboards or self-service analytics tools like PowerBI or Tableau. The Power of a Data Glossary: Instead, a highly effective starting point is creating a data glossary. This document should include all the KPIs and metrics your organization uses, along with clear definitions, examples, and any alternative names they might have. Creating Your Unique Data Glossary: - Customize It: Your data glossary should be unique to your organization, even though some metrics may be industry-standard. - Use a Simple Template: A straightforward template with four columns works best: - Metric/KPI Name: Ensure each name is unique within your organization. - Explanation: Describe the metric in simple, business-friendly language. - Example: Provide a clear example to illustrate what the metric looks like. - Alternative Names: List any other names the metric might be known by. Building the Glossary: - Start with Existing Reports: Populate the glossary using metrics from current reports and dashboards. - Resolve Conflicts: If different teams use the same term differently, achieve consensus by renaming to ensure clarity. - Maintain Version Control: Use cloud-based tools like Google Sheets or Confluence to keep the glossary updated and accessible. Establishing a strong data culture in any organization begins with securing genuine buy-in from senior leadership. This isn't just about having support written into documents, it's about seeing that support actively practiced and championed from the top down. When tasked with transforming an organization to become data-driven, your first step should be to ensure you have true senior-level sponsorship. Without this, data initiatives often fail to influence the most critical decisions, such as strategic direction, business models, or customer loyalty programs. Instead, data might only serve tactical purposes, like marketing or sales, without being integral to the core business strategy. Moreover, without senior leadership buy-in, data initiatives are vulnerable when the organization faces challenges. Data might be one of the first areas where cuts are made, whether in tools, technology, or key projects. The interest in data can also wane over time, especially if there's no consistent leadership advocating for it. For those leading data-driven transformations or building a data strategy, it's crucial to keep senior leaders engaged and informed. Listen to their priorities and align data initiatives to what matters most to the business.
